To the sons and daughters of Israel, everywhere—may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
At the end of the year, as we prepare for the beginning of a new year that is coming upon us and all the sons and daughters of Israel for good and blessing, each person makes for themselves at least a general plan regarding their conduct and actions for the coming days, accepting upon themselves to ascend higher and higher.
The upcoming year 5712 is a Shemitah year—a year about which it is written: "Shnat Shabbaton yihyeh la'aretz Shabbat laHashem (the land shall have a complete rest, a Sabbath to Hashem)... V'hayta Shabbat ha'aretz lachem le'ochlah... u'l'vehemtecha v'gomer" (and the Sabbath produce of the land shall be yours to eat... and for your animal etc.). The verse never departs from its simple meaning. But in addition to this, our holy Torah hints at a great lesson and prepares for us a detailed plan for the coming year: 'Shabbat Shabbaton yihyeh la'aretz'—a cessation from all worldliness and materialism in our daily lives and actions. 'Shabbat laHashem,' for Hashem's sake—not for false ideas or foreign perspectives that mislead and divert the Jewish person from his original and essential path—the path of Hashem—for which our first father Avraham gave his life. He commanded his children and household after him to keep this path; so they did; and on this path our nation Israel has lived for over three thousand years.
'V'hayta Shabbat ha'aretz lachem le'ochlah... u'l'vehemtecha' (and the Sabbath produce of the land shall be yours to eat... and for your animal)—the cessation from materialism and attainment of spirituality is not meant only during prayer or Torah study. Afterwards one might say in his heart: in my business dealings, in my eating, etc., let us be like all other nations—this is not our way. One G‑d and one Torah for Israel—a unique nation on earth. Unity and wholeness must exist in our lives—lives that are unified, founded upon, and permeated by one idea: Yisrael, Oraysa (Torah), u'Kudsha Brich Hu (the Holy One Blessed Be He) are all one. The Sabbath of the land—a Sabbath to Hashem—must be present in all our matters—even in eating—even regarding one's animal.
Only through such a way of life have we existed until now; by deciding to bring this conduct into practical daily living also in the future, we will merit being inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year with revealed good.
Summary
The Shemitah year teaches us to infuse every aspect of life with holiness—not just prayer or study but also mundane activities—so that unity with Torah permeates all we do. This commitment brings blessing for a truly good new year.
