The 265th Mitzvah
1. The prohibition in which we were warned against occupying our thoughts with schemes for acquiring the property of our fellow Jews.
2. This is as He, may He be exalted, said: "לא תחמד בית רעך" ("You shall not covet your fellow's house," Shemos 20:14).
3. The words of the Mechilta: "'לא תחמד'—might it mean even coveting in speech? Therefore the Torah says: 'לא תחמד כסף וזהב עליהם ולקחת לך' ('You shall not covet the silver and gold upon them and take it for yourself,' Devarim 7:25). Just as there, it applies only once he does an act, so too here, it applies only once he does an act."
4. It is thus explained to you that this prohibition warns against devising schemes to obtain for ourselves something of our brother's property that we have coveted—even by buying it and paying a high price. All of this is a transgression of "לא תחמד" ("You shall not covet").
