כְּשֶׁהָיָ' הַצֶ"צֶ בֶּן תֵּשַׁע שָׁנִים אָמַר לֹו רַבֵּינוּ הַזָקֵן: קִבַּלְתִּי מִמֹורִי (הָרַב הַמַגִיד) שֶׁקִיבֵּל מִמֹורֹו (הַבַעשֵׁ"טֹ) בְּשֵׁם מֹורֹו הַיָדוּעַ, [אחי' השילוני] אַשֶׁר מִיֹום שֵׁנִי דְרֹ"חֹ אֶלוּל עַד יֹום הַכִּפּוּרִים, יֹאמְרוּ בְּכָל יֹום וָיֹום בְּמֶשֶׂך הַיֹום שְׁלֹשָׁה קַאפִּ' תְּהִלִים, וּבְּיֹוהַכִּ"פֻּ שְׁלֹשִׁים וְשִׁשָׁה קַאפְּ': ט' קֹודֶם כָּל נִדְרֵי, ט' קֹודֶם הַשִׁינָה, ט' אַחַר מוּסַף, ט' אַחַר נְעִילָה. וּמִי שֶׁלֹא הִתְחִיל בְּיֹום בֵּ דְרֹ"חֹ יַתְחִיל בְּאֹותֹו יֹום שֶׁהוּא עֹומֵד בֹּו, וְאֶת אַשֶׁר הֶחְסִיר יַשְׁלִים.
Aleph Elul, Rosh Chodesh
When the Tzemach Tzedek was nine years old, the Alter Rebbe told him: I received from my teacher (the Maggid), who received from his teacher (the Baal Shem Tov), in the name of his teacher, the well-known master [Achiyah HaShiloni], that from the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur, each day throughout the day, three chapters of Tehillim are to be said. And on Yom Kippur, thirty-six chapters: nine before Kol Nidrei, nine before sleep, nine after Musaf, and nine after Ne’ilah. [Explanation]
And one who did not begin on the second day of Rosh Chodesh should begin on the day he is up to, and make up what he missed.
