מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו
ובעמדנו בתחלת חדש אלול, הוא חדש הרחמים והרצון, אשר בחדש זה הוא, כדברי כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן,
משל למלך שקודם בואו לעיר יוצאין אנשי העיר לקראתו ומקבלין פניו בשדה ואז רשאין כל מי שרוצה לצאת להקביל פניו והוא מקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם,
ומבאר כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר - רשאים ויכולים
יהי רצון אשר יומשך כל זה בעניני הגוף והנשמה גם יחד, ועד עניני "ימות החול",
וכמובן מהמשל - כי כיון שהמלך נמצא בשדה ומקבל בספר פנים יפות את אנשי העיר כמו שהם בשדה, הרי סביבותם גם עניני שדה, ומהם כמה הזקוקים לישועה לברכה ולהצלחה.
ובפרט ע"פ המאמר הידוע של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר נשיא ישראל:
דער אויבערשטער זאל געבען אידען א שנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות בכלל ובפרט - וועלן אידן טאן וואס זיי קענען, און דער אויבערשטער וועט זעהן וואס אידן קענען.

Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter. As we stand at the beginning of the month of Elul, which is the month of mercy and favor, it is in this month—as explained by our master, the Alter Rebbe—a parable: Before a king enters a city, the people of the city go out to greet him and receive him in the field. At that time, anyone who wishes may go out to greet him, and he receives everyone with a pleasant countenance and shows a smiling face to all. The Previous Rebbe explains: they are permitted and able.
May it be G‑d’s will that all this be drawn down into both material and spiritual matters together—even into weekday matters. This is evident from the parable: since the king is in the field and receives people as they are in the field with a pleasant countenance, their surroundings are also those of a field—and among them are many who need salvation, blessing, and success.
Especially according to the well-known saying of my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe and leader of Israel: "Der Oybershter zol gebn Yidden a shanah tovah u'mesukah begashmiyus u'veruchniyus b'klal u'bifrat—veln Yidden ton vos zei kenen un der Oybershter vet zehen vos Yidden kenen." (May G‑d grant Jews a good and sweet year materially and spiritually—generally and particularly; Jews will do what they can, and G‑d will see what Jews can do.)
With blessing for being written and sealed for good in general and in particular.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that during Elul, G‑d is especially accessible to everyone—like a king in the field—welcoming all with kindness. This openness brings opportunities for blessing both materially and spiritually as we prepare for a good year ahead.
