Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter from January 16. Your question was: what should you believe in—the path in which you were educated for years, or what you heard from a certain person over two evenings?
You have surely heard the expression "returning to the sources." You certainly know that education does not operate in a vacuum or on an empty slate. Every person, even before education begins, already possesses certain matters rooted in their soul—matters whose source is the innermost part of the soul. Moreover, these are precisely the things that education cannot change; it can only cover them up for a longer or shorter period. There are many proofs of this in educational science, medicine, biology, etc.
This is why we often see that a single appearance or a brief word—a "lesson" that did not last at all—can fundamentally change a person. The reason is that the person only needed something to remove what was covering over what was already present deep within their soul.
The above is an answer to your question about what you should believe in. The very fact that you were so affected by what you heard over just two evenings is itself proof of what our Sages told us thousands of years ago: all Jews are believers, children of believers. Sometimes this faith is covered by a layer of foreign and external things. Fortunate is the lot of anyone who has this layer removed quickly and stands on truth and returns to their source.
I hope that my few lines—even though they are few compared to the importance of the matter—will suffice to illuminate the issue. I would be pleased to hear good news regarding this.
With blessing,
In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
P.S. At an auspicious time your mother will be mentioned for all she needs at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal (see Shabbat 97a).
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that faith and core values are innate within every Jew; education may only cover them temporarily but cannot erase them. Even brief inspiration can reveal these inner truths and help one reconnect with their authentic self.
