במענה למכתבו מכ' סיון, ולפלא שאינו מזכיר דבר מהתקדמות בעניני תורה ומצות, ובפרט על פי מה שכתבתי לו מכבר שאם כל אחד מישראל נצטוה על קיום התורה והמצוה לקיימם במילואם עאכו"כ אלה הנמצאים בצבא אשר תוספת קדושה נדרשת מהם, ולא עוד אלא שהנהגתם משפיעה על כל הצבור ובטחונו, וכמ"ש (דברים כג, טו): כי ה' אלקיך מתהלך בקרב מחנך להצילך ולתת אויבך לפניך והי' מחנך קדוש, ולא יראה בך ערות דבר ושב מאחריך. שמכלל הן אתה שומע כו' ז.א. אשר מי שאינו מתנהג בקדושה בהיותו בצבא ה"ה מתנגד עי"ז לה' אלקיך מתהלך בקרב מחנך ומתנגד לההצלה ונתינת האויבים לפני הצבא. והאם ישנה בגידה יותר מבהילה במצב הבטחון של הצבא?
תקותי ששורותי אלו אף כי מעטות בכמות צ תספיקנה לא רק להשפיע טוב על הנהגתו הוא מתאים להאמור, אלא שגם ישפיע על כל חבריו שי' בכיוון האמור, וחזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם, ובלבד שיהיו דברים היוצאים מן הלב שאז נכנסים ללב שומעם.

In response to your letter from the 20th of Sivan, it is surprising that you do not mention any progress in matters of Torah and mitzvos, especially considering what I have already written to you: if every Jew is commanded to fully observe Torah and mitzvos, how much more so those in the army, from whom an extra measure of holiness is required. Moreover, their conduct influences the entire community and its security. As it is written (Devarim 23:15): 'For Hashem your G-d walks in the midst of your camp to save you and deliver your enemies before you; therefore your camp shall be holy, so that He should not see anything unseemly among you and turn away from you.' From this positive statement we learn its opposite as well—meaning that someone who does not behave with holiness while in the army thereby opposes 'Hashem your G-d walks in the midst of your camp' and opposes salvation and the defeat of enemies before the army. Is there a greater betrayal or threat to the army's security?
I hope that these few lines will suffice not only to positively influence your own conduct according to what was said above but also to affect all your friends in this direction. It is well known that sincere advocacy never returns empty-handed—provided that words come from the heart, they will enter the heart of those who hear them.

P.S. Surely you know about the story of the Festival of Redemption on 12th and 13th Tammuz, and you will try to participate in one of the gatherings taking place these days in Eretz HaKodesh.
