Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter in which you inform me that five years have passed for your son ... sheyichyeh and you have enrolled him in cheder: May it be His will that you raise him to Torah, marriage, and good deeds together with his wife tichyeh, with ample material and spiritual tranquility.

It was explained at the farbrengen of Shabbat Mevarchim of the past month that there is a precise meaning in the traditional phrase among Israel: "to Torah, to marriage, and to good deeds." These correspond to the three Patriarchs: Torah—Yaakov, who dwelled in the tents of Shem and Ever (which refers to both Written and Oral Torah as explained in Or HaTorah by tzt"z on the discourse "Yoshev Ohalim"). Marriage—Yitzchak, who was bound at the place of the Beit HaMikdash; as our Sages say (Midrash Shir HaShirim; see also Zohar III 3b and end of Ta'anit in Mishnayot), when the Shechinah descended into the Beit HaMikdash it was "the day of His wedding," which is the wedding canopy of the Holy One Blessed Be He with Israel. It is explained often in Chassidus on our Sages' statement that 'the conversation of the servants of the Patriarchs is more beautiful,' that this is why the Torah elaborates so much on Yitzchak's marriage to Rivkah—because it is a general matter relevant to all Israel. Good deeds—Avraham, whose essence was acts of kindness, especially charity. It is explained at length at the beginning of Torah Or Vayeira that these qualities of the three Patriarchs must be present in every Jew (unlike those of the tribes).

You also mention in your above letter that you are traveling on a mission for Tomchei Tmimim to other countries. May it be His will that you succeed both materially and spiritually. As my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal would say to emissaries traveling from our holy institutions: "They should gather materiality and sow—plant—spirituality."

With blessing.

Summary

The Rebbe connects traditional blessings for children with deep Chassidic insights about embodying Torah (Yaakov), marriage (Yitzchak), and good deeds (Avraham). He encourages success in both physical and spiritual endeavors when serving as an emissary.
