Shalom u'Vrachah!
As I have heard, to my great sorrow, the misunderstanding between your son ... sheyichyeh and his wife tichyeh has still not been resolved. My distress is even greater when I hear that they are still not living together, and that there are even those who are speaking about a get (divorce) between them.
I feel it is my duty to write to you, because surely you have influence over your son, so that you should know that this concerns an issue that affects your son's entire life; therefore it is also a life matter for you as his parents. You must involve yourselves in this matter and see to it that there will be shalom bayis (peace in the home) between them, and that they should establish a normal married life together on their own—not with her parents nor with his parents—which will make it easier for them to strengthen their shalom bayis as it should be in a Jewish home.
I have heard about the various reasons given as obstacles to restoring shalom bayis, and I have also heard the reasons your son told me when he was with me. Despite all these reasons, I feel it is my duty to emphasize that here we are dealing with a life matter for two young people; therefore no external matters should be mixed into this. One must also remember what our holy Torah teaches us: that the Aibershter (the Almighty) said that one may even—in certain cases—erase His holy Name in order to establish shalom bayis between husband and wife. From this alone one can understand how great is the danger for those who hinder shalom bayis, and how immeasurably great is the reward for those who help restore shalom bayis between husband and wife.
I believe that for parents whose child's happiness is certainly precious, I do not need to write more on this subject. I hope you will do everything possible to bring your son together with his wife and rebuild their shalom bayis. May the Aibershter help you so that you will have health and Jewish nachas from these children and from your other children sheyichyu.
With blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe stresses the vital importance of shalom bayis in marriage and urges parents to actively support reconciliation between their son and daughter-in-law. He highlights Torah's prioritization of peace in the home above all else.
