The 34th Mitzvah
1. We have been commanded that the Kohanim must carry the Aron on their shoulders when it is to be moved from place to place.
2. This is as He, may He be exalted, said: "For the service of the holy things belongs to them; they shall carry them on their shoulders" (Bamidbar 7:9).
3. Even though this command was given at that time to the Leviim, this was only because of the small number of Kohanim then, since Aharon was the first; but for future generations, the mitzvah is an obligation upon the Kohanim, and they are the ones who carry it, as is explained in the book of Yehoshua and in the book of Shmuel.
4. And when David commanded to move the Aron the second time, he said in Divrei HaYamim: "And the sons of Levi carried the Aron of G‑d, as Moshe had commanded according to the word of G‑d, on their shoulders with poles upon them."
5. Likewise, when Divrei HaYamim mentions the division of the Kohanim into twenty-four watches, and then says: "These were their appointments for their service, to come into the house of Hashem according to their rule, by the hand of Aharon their father, as Hashem, the G‑d of Israel, had commanded him," Chazal explained that this alludes to the fact that the service of the Kohanim is to carry the Aron on the shoulder, and this is what Hashem, the G‑d of Israel, commanded him.
6. And the language of the Sifri: "'According to their rule... as Hashem, the G‑d of Israel, had commanded him'—where did He command him? 'But to the sons of Kehos He did not give... on the shoulder they shall carry.'" Thus, it is clear that this is included among the mitzvos.
