Shalom Dov Lipschitz (activist and Torah educator)

Shalom Dov Lipschitz is identified in the correspondence as a young Torah scholar and active member of "Chever Peilei Machane HaTorati" (the Association of Torah Camp Activists), engaged in outreach and educational efforts within the Torah community, particularly in Eretz HaKodesh (the Land of Israel).

Correspondence with the Rebbe

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, addressed Shalom Dov Lipschitz in a letter dated 16 Elul 5711 (1951), responding to his concerns about the balance between his personal Torah study and his involvement in communal outreach. Lipschitz described the challenges he faced: despite seeing positive results from his work with Chever Peilei Machane HaTorati, he noted a lack of sufficient support from the broader chareidi public, resulting in a heavy personal burden and a reduction in his own Torah learning. He questioned whether he was truly obligated to "abandon his own soul for the sake of others."

The Rebbe expressed surprise at this question, emphasizing the tremendous merit and responsibility involved in saving fellow Jews from spiritual danger and strengthening their connection to G-d and His Torah. Citing Talmudic sources, the Rebbe explained that when a mitzvah cannot be fulfilled by others, it overrides even Torah study. Furthermore, he encouraged Lipschitz by referencing the teaching that one who helps others in Torah is himself enlightened and elevated, often achieving greater success in his own learning as a result. The Rebbe warned against the subtle persuasions of the evil inclination, which may discourage such vital communal work under the guise of personal spiritual advancement.

The Rebbe concluded with blessings for success in both his holy work and Torah study, and requested information about Lipschitz's learning schedule before and after his involvement in outreach. The tone of the letter is both encouraging and instructive, reflecting the Rebbe's deep appreciation for selfless communal service and his guidance on harmonizing it with personal spiritual growth.
