Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, in which you write about a wedding in the family and the bride requests that at least until the wedding her father should shave his beard—and if not, etc. Even though it is generally not proper to answer one person regarding matters that concern another, especially since most times one cannot know all the details of the situation and certainly not what is in another's heart, nevertheless, due to my great astonishment I am responding. My astonishment is twofold: (a) That an adult—since she is already a bride—relates to her father and makes public fulfillment of such a demand as this; I must emphasize how far things have gone that she publicizes this demand, etc. (b) That this concerns a Chabad family who surely knows (or at least should know) that according to the leaders of Chabad, growing a beard is a matter of halachah. Furthermore—and this too is important—there is a special segulah in this for drawing down abundant blessing from Hashem, as explained at length in the writings of Admor HaTzaddik tzt"z. Every day and in every situation, one needs the blessing of 'the Creator of man,' 'the Creator and Ruler of the world,' and all the more so when laying the foundation stone for an everlasting building such as marriage. Yet specifically regarding the chuppah and marriage there comes such an automatic demand to do the opposite of what was said—G‑d forbid!
I must add another point: even if we were speaking about non-Jews (to distinguish), it has become fashionable in recent years to grow beards, and from time to time more people adopt this practice; and (in line with your letter's style) they are regarded as respectable people. I do not know how much influence she has on those mentioned above, but our Sages said: 'Accept the truth from whoever says it.' May it be G‑d's will that you succeed in explaining to those involved how strange this whole matter is and its lack of logic—in addition to its halachic aspect here—especially since her father has been growing his beard for some time.
It is understood that what was said above does not pertain to combing the beard with an appropriate comb, as their local rabbi will explain.
Based on your writing about your family and origins, I hope that under the banner of Chabad families you are active in spreading traditional Judaism in your environment and wherever your influence reaches. We have been assured that words coming from the heart enter into the heart of those who hear them and have their effect.
Blessings for good news in all mentioned above, in the name of His Honor our Rebbe shlita.
Summary
The Rebbe strongly objects to demands for shaving one's beard before a wedding, especially within Chabad families. He highlights both halachic reasons and spiritual benefits for maintaining a beard, urging respect for tradition even amidst social pressures or personal requests.
